Ordination Of Bishop-Elect John Ryan in Malawi
St Patrick’s Father John Ryan was ordained as Bishop of Mzuzu, Malawi, at St Peter’s Cathederal in Mzuzu on Saturday 27th August 2016.
Bishop John is from Holy Cross in County Tipperary in Ireland. He came to Kiltegan in 1970 and was ordained in 1978, and since then has ministered in Malawi. He has been involved in pastoral work throughout his time in Malawi, but has also been involved in teaching Mathematics in the University of Mzuzu, having completed his MA and PhD in Mathematics at University College Cork.
The co-consecrators of the new Bishop were Bishop Dr Martin Mtumbuka of the Karonga Diocese, Archbishops Ziyaye of Lilongwe Archdiocese and Msusa of Blantyre Archdiocese, and Archbishop Julio Murat, the Papal Nuncio to Malawi.
The President of Malawi, Prof Peter Mutharika, and the Vice President, Dr Saulos Chilima, attended the ceremony. Members of Bishop John’s family travelled from Ireland to be with him on the occasion and many members of St Patrick’s Missionary Society were there to support him.
Bishop John has chosen as his motto: Everything except sin is sacred based on the teaching of Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si’.
